Volumetric weight explained — why your 5 kg parcel cost like 20 kg
The math airlines use, in plain language — and how to save money by optimising your packaging.
Ever shipped a big box of light stuff — like shoes or toys — and paid way more than you expected? Welcome to volumetric weight.
The formula
Every air cargo company, including us, uses:
Volumetric weight (kg) = L × W × H (cm) ÷ 6000
We charge whichever is HIGHER: actual weight or volumetric weight. That's why shoes in a giant box cost more than bricks in a small box.
How to save money
- Ask your supplier to pack tightly — no empty air
- Use vacuum bags for clothes or pillows
- Remove retail packaging if it's not needed
- Consolidate multiple orders in one box
Our Guangzhou team can also re-pack for you — it's a free service.
